The 100th Birthday of Family and Consumer Sciences Education
December 31, 2008-January 1, 2009
Whereas, Family and Consumer Sciences was founded as a field of work and study known
as home economics to address practical applications of the natural and social sciences on January 1, 1909; and
Whereas, the Vision of Family and Consumer Sciences is to empower individuals and
families across the life span to manage the challenges of living and working
in a diverse, global society; and,
Whereas, the unique focus of Family and Consumer Sciences is on families, work, and
their interrelationships; and
Whereas, Family and Consumer Sciences has a rich history as a field of work and study,
and continues to be an integrated, holistic, and interdisciplinary field; and
Whereas, Family and Consumer Sciences professionals continue to respond to changing
needs of modern-day individuals, families, communities, and the workplace; and
Whereas, Family and Consumer Sciences functions today within the larger field of career
and technical education, supports several national career clusters, and endorses
initiatives and philosophies of 21st Century Skills; and
Whereas, Family and Consumer Sciences unites a variety of professionals who work in
specialty areas to enhance safety and quality of life; and
Whereas, the stage is set to celebrate the 100th birthday in all 100 North Carolina counties
from July 1, 2008 through July 30, 2009;
Therefore, be it resolved:
That December 3, 2008 be declared as Family and Consumer Sciences Education Centennial
Day in North Carolina; and
That Family and Consumer Sciences students and teachers in all schools be encouraged to
plan projects and activities to commemorate 100 years of empowering
individuals, strengthening families, and enabling communities.
